A Soviet-era classic arrives for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 courtesy of the team over at Nemeth Designs. No strangers to the flight sim space, Nemeth Designs departs from their long tradition of producing rotary-wing and classic general aviation aircraft to bring us the Ilyushin Il-18D. This aircraft is the largest one they’ve developed to date.

Compared to the first production Il-18 airframes, the ‘D’ variant features an improved powerplant and structural reinforcement, allowing higher takeoff weights and increased passenger capacity. The main difference between the Il-18D and other civilian Il-18 variants, however, is in its fuel capacity. This made way for the aircraft to undertake longer-range flights, though at the progressive expense of payload as fuel requirements increase with mission distance.

The development team set out for a very high degree of fidelity with this addon, producing highly detailed interior and exterior models for the Il-18D, replete with high-resolution textures and dynamic lighting. It also features a true-to-life cockpit, with gauges and instruments representative of the 1950’s period during which the real aircraft was developed and produced.

A fully modelled KS6 heading and attitude gyroscope system is implemented and forms the core of the navigation apparatus in this aircraft. It provides gyro-stabilised heading information to several instruments. One of these instruments is the UK1 course selector, which integrates aircraft heading, autopilot selected heading, and VOR directional information into a single display.

Other aircraft systems surely weren’t neglected, as other key features of the aircraft include authentic reproductions of the electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and fuel systems. The autopilot has also been meticulously adjusted to produce realistic behaviour in pitch, roll and altitude hold modes.

A paint kit is available for the livery artists among us to express their creativity, and Nemeth Designs also supplies an extensive 4-part manual for the aircraft, covering its systems, cockpit instruments, procedures and navigation. Both can be downloaded from the product page on the developer’s website without purchasing the Il-18D, so you can peruse and familiarise yourself with the aircraft without commitment. When you’re ready to take the plunge, though, and experience this Soviet icon in a modern flight simulator, you can purchase the Nemeth Designs Ilyushin Il-18D for MSFS 2024 from the in-game Marketplace for $39.49 USD.
