Majestic Software made flight simmer hearts jump by releasing the first render shots of the much-awaited De Havilland Canada DHC-8 Q400, aiming to fill the high-fidelity turboprop gap in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. Since the Asobo era of MSFS began in 2020, fans have been waiting for a high-quality rendition of the Q400—a popular regional and commuter workhorse. Majestic Software’s Q400 for Prepar3D is considered a study-level benchmark, so expectations for the MSFS version are high.

Render Details
The first render shots of the Q400 put the Dowty propellers in focus, showcasing them from different angles. Dirt build-up and paint chipping highlight the level of detail that Majestic Software is putting into the Q400. Unfortunately, the developer did not feel ready to share in-sim screenshots, but promised to do so as soon as they deem it “permissible” to do so.

The Dash 8 Q400 is a twin-engine turboprop known for its speed, efficiency, and reliability. Powered by Pratt & Whitney Canada PW150A engines, it achieves cruise speeds of up to 360 knots, which is considered fast for a turboprop. With seating typically between 74 and 78 passengers, it has a maximum range of around 1,100 nautical miles, making it ideal for short- to medium-length routes. Its “Q” (Quiet) designation comes from an Active Noise and Vibration Suppression system that significantly reduces cabin noise compared to earlier Dash 8 variants.
Development Timeline
The high expectations from the flight sim community have led Majestic Software to take a careful and deliberate approach to developing the plane for MSFS 2020. Initially announced in September 2020, the developer has provided small updates and announcements for nearly five years, without committing to a deadline. Majestic Software reported that the plane had to be rebuilt from scratch, as porting from the P3D version proved impossible due to MSFS’s SDK and rendering pipeline requirements.

Despite the long development process, support among the community has remained strong, demonstrating the level of trust that Majestic Software enjoys. Eventually, Majestic Software plans to release the Q400 for MSFS 2024 as well.
