Microsoft Releases Antonov An-28 Local Legend for MSFS

The Antonov An-28 twin-turboprop STOL utility aircraft is now in the Microsoft Flight Simulator marketplace for $14.99 USD.

Microsoft Flight Simulator has released the Antonov An-28, a rugged twin-turboprop utility aircraft, for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. The release was announced on the official Microsoft Flight Simulator website as part of the Local Legend series of aircraft.

The Local Legend Antonov An-28 was developed for Microsoft by ATSimulations, a smaller development studio that previously released an Antonov An-2, Focke-Wulf 149, or a Piaggio P.149 for Microsoft Flight Simulator, to name a few.

The An-28 is a light short take-off and landing (STOL) aircraft designed by the Ukrainian company Antonov. It is flown by two pilots and can carry up to 17 passengers, around 4,000 pounds of cargo, or a mix of the two. Antonov built 191 airframes between 1975 and 1993, and many are still flying. The type has been used for passenger and freight services, medical evacuation, military transport and troop insertion, aerial photography and geotechnical surveying, and it is known for operating from almost any kind of airfield.

The aircraft grew out of an earlier Antonov design, the piston-engined An-14, which first flew in 1958 to serve remote communities with only small dirt or gravel strips. In the mid-1960s the Soviet airline Aeroflot asked for a small, short-range airliner. Antonov fitted turboprops to an An-14 airframe, creating the An-14A, which flew in 1969. The first dedicated An-28 prototype followed on January 29, 1973. It keeps the An-14’s strut-braced wing, fixed tricycle undercarriage and twin-tail layout, but is larger and considerably more powerful.

According to the developer, the simulator version has been reproduced in “exquisite detail”. The announcement does not describe its systems, liveries or other features. It does give the real aircraft’s key figures, which the sim model is presumably based on.

The An-28, which is replicated in the Microsoft Flight Simulator, is, presumably, 43 feet long with a wingspan of 72 feet 5 inches, and it is powered by two 960-horsepower Glushenkov TVD-10B turboprops. It cruises at 219 miles per hour, has a range of 851 miles and a service ceiling of 19,685 feet, and needs a take-off run of about 1,350 feet and a landing roll of about 1,033 feet.
