Microsoft Flight Simulator has released the Airbus A400M Atlas for MSFS 2020. The aircraft was revealed through the simulator’s official communication channels, where it was described as “inbound and cleared to land,” indicating its release on the in-sim Marketplace. The post has been published a day before the official release.
The Airbus A400M Atlas is a four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft developed by Airbus Defence and Space. In real-world operations, the aircraft occupies a unique position within the military airlift segment, combining strategic transport capabilities with the flexibility traditionally associated with tactical platforms. Its design allows for the transportation of heavy and oversized cargo while retaining the ability to operate from shorter and semi-prepared airstrips, a characteristic that has made it a versatile asset for a wide range of missions.

For Microsoft Flight Simulator users, the introduction of the A400M represents an interesting expansion of the simulator’s aircraft ecosystem. While MSFS primarily focuses on civil aviation, the addition of military-oriented aircraft has steadily increased, providing simmers with opportunities to explore different flight profiles and operational contexts. Aircraft such as the A400M naturally lend themselves to varied scenarios, including long-haul repositioning flights, logistical operations, and specialised transport missions.
From a flight dynamics perspective, the A400M offers a markedly different experience compared to conventional commercial airliners. The combination of four turboprop engines, a high-wing configuration, and a large airframe introduces distinct handling characteristics, particularly during takeoff, climb, and low-speed operations. These elements contribute to a flight model that is expected to appeal to users interested in heavier aircraft and non-standard procedures.

Beyond its flight behaviour, the aircraft’s presence within the simulator may also enhance immersion for those recreating realistic global operations. The A400M plays a notable role in modern military aviation, and its inclusion broadens the variety of aircraft types available for virtual flight planning and route selection.
The Airbus A400M Atlas released via the Microsoft Flight Simulator Marketplace at a price point of $19.99 USD.
