Orbx Announces Detroit Coleman A. Young Airport (KDET) for MSFS

Orbx has announced the development of scenery for Detroit Coleman A. Young International Airport (KDET) is set to be released for both Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024 in the near future. The scenery is expected to feature some ultra-high quality details, thanks to the work of a well-experienced Indie developer.

Formerly known as Detroit City Airport before being renamed in honour of the city’s first African-American mayor in 2003, the airport has played a major part in the story of aviation history in the United States. Opened in 1927, it was the primary airport for Detroit before the rise of Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County (KDTW). Since then, the airport has become a hub for corporate, private and charter flying.

The scenery is being developed by Massimiliano Addante, one of Orbx’s Indie developers who has been known to work on sceneries as large as FSDreamTeam’s Charlotte-Douglas, Chicago O’Hare v2 and more. In the announcement made on the OrbxDirect’s forums, it was shared that the scenery will have handcrafted details, including fully modelled interiors of the terminal and control tower. It will also have high-resolution textures with full PBR materials, and dozens of custom assets with animated elements.

On top of the detailed work on the buildings, the airport is also built with a carefully created AFCAD file, including runways and parking stands. There are also no repeat textures in the scenery, with each building featuring its own unique texture sets. The scenery will contain 4-10 Levels of Detail (LODs), which Orbx says will ensure “a seamless experience across platforms.”

In addition to this upcoming release, Orbx previously released their Detroit City Pack, which enhances the city’s skyline with over 52 custom landmarks and animated features like the Detroit People Mover. While a specific release date for the scenery is yet to be announced, the product will likely be available through OrbxDirect. Read more about previous Orbx releases here on FSNews.
