The popular X-Plane scenery generation utility Ortho4XP has received its newest update to version 3. As the developer Ypsos has stated on the X-Plane forum, the update is focused on improving stability, cleaning up the codebase, and refining the launcher’s usability. While this is not not a feature-heavy release, the update continues the ongoing modernization of one of the X-Plane community’s most widely used scenery generation tools.
Ortho4XP is a free utility that allows users to create photorealistic scenery in X-Plane by converting real-world satellite imagery and elevation data into custom scenery tiles, replacing the the simulator’s default ground textures with high-resolution imagery while maintaining accurate terrain features.

According to the developer, the new version builds on the work introduced in the previous release, which served to gather community feedback and address bugs. This latest update refines those improvements based on user feedback, with an emphasis on making the application more stable and easier to maintain.
Key changes include reorganized Elevation and Bathymetry modules for handling land mesh and water depth data while utilizing a cleaner folder structure, new Credits & License and History buttons in the launcher, automatic version number display, code cleanup, and performance improvements.
Ortho4XP remains free and open-source under the GNU GPL v3 license, building on the original work of Oscar Pilote and Shred86’s Version 1.40. Ypsos reiterates that the project is completely free and does not accept donations. Ortho4XP is available via the X-Plane forums.
