Parallel 42 has officially released SkyTrails for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, unveiling the new utility during its presentation at FlightSimExpo 2026. Available now for both PC and Xbox, the add-on is designed to bring greater life and realism to the virtual skies by generating visible contrails from AI, live, and multiplayer traffic.
Presented during the opening day of FlightSimExpo, SkyTrails focuses on a subtle aspect of aviation that many simmers may overlook until it is missing. In the real world, aircraft contrails frequently stretch across the sky, serving as a constant reminder of the countless flights operating around the globe. Parallel 42’s latest release aims to recreate that atmosphere within Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024.
According to the developer, the concept originated from a simple observation: simulator skies can sometimes feel empty despite representing one of the busiest transportation networks in the world. SkyTrails addresses this by populating the atmosphere with realistic high-altitude contrails, making the environment feel more dynamic and believable without impacting the core flight experience.

Bringing Life Back to the Skies
SkyTrails generates contrails from several traffic sources, including AI aircraft, live traffic, and multiplayer users. The utility can also create intelligently generated fictional contrails to ensure skies remain active even in areas with limited real-world traffic.
The system has been designed to blend naturally into the simulator environment, creating the impression of a living airspace without overwhelming the scenery. Users can configure the experience to match their preferences, ranging from realistic traffic-based contrails to denser atmospheric environments featuring additional fictional traffic traces.

Extensive Customization Options
The add-on includes a dedicated configuration interface accessible through the in-sim EFB, allowing users to tailor the experience to their liking.
Key features include:
- Contrails generated from AI traffic
- Contrails generated from live traffic
- Multiplayer traffic support

FlightSimExpo 2026 Announcement
The release was officially revealed during FlightSimExpo Friday, where Parallel 42 showcased the product’s ability to populate skies with realistic aircraft contrails and demonstrated how the utility integrates seamlessly into Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024.
While SkyTrails may not be the most visually dramatic add-on announced during the event, it focuses on enhancing immersion through small environmental details that many simmers encounter every day in the real world. By recreating the presence of distant traffic high above the simulator world, Parallel 42 hopes to make virtual skies feel busier, more authentic, and ultimately more alive. SkyTrails is available now for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 on PC and Xbox through the Parallel 42 store.
