Mathijs Kok of PMDG has taken to the PMDG forums to announce that the company has suspended the sale of its Prepar3D products indefinitely.
The announcement was made in a forum discussion where user RayP asked about the 737NGXu being removed from sale. Other users commented that the P3D products were removed from sale temporarily for the launch of the 777 for Microsoft Flight Simulator in order to prevent confused buyers from purchasing the P3D version of the product instead of the MSFS version.
However, Mathijs Kok stepped into the conversation to confirm that PMDG has not only stopped selling its P3D products, but that they also aren’t sure if they will be returning to sale. He states that this is because the costs to sell these products did not bring in any profit. In a separate, but related thread for the JetStream 41 for FSX, he explains a little more about why these low sales products are not profitable, stating that “the costs of servers, protection, support, administration, etc. would mean every single sale would be… a big loss.”
It’s perhaps no surprise that this has happened. According to the 2023 Navigraph Community Survey, Prepar3D accounts for less than five percent of the flight sim user base. With the wild success of the PMDG 777 for MSFS, which managed to sell over 6,000 units in 3 minutes, it’s likely that PMDG saw no benefit to keeping these products up for sale.
It seems that a decision has not been made as to whether or not they will be removed permanently, or if they will return at some point. If any new information on this topic comes out, we will let you know. If you’d like to view the original forum post, you can do so here.
