Review: FlyTampa Copenhagen v2 for P3D

FlyTampa recently updated their rendition of the Copenhagen airport to version 2. This update adds PBR textures, SODE VDGS support or dynamic lighting. First of all, I would like to thank the FlyTampa developers for making this possible.

Copenhagen Kasturp International Airport (EKCH) is the biggest and busiest international airport in Denmark. It was opened back in 1925. It has 3 terminals and it is usually operated by Scandinavian Airlines, Norwegian, Air Greenland or EasyJet.

Installation

I would like to start this review right from the beginning. The installation of the sceneries through the universal installer is very simple and compact. What I, unfortunately, didn’t like, is the speed of the download, which was for sure not the best. For its size of 5GB, which I would normally download within two hours, I’ve been downloading the file for four hours, even though I selected the closest server to me, which was located in Amsterdam. What I liked is, that it will directly install the scenery to your simulator folder (xx/program files/Prepar3D V4) and not to the documents folder, but still, you won’t have to add the scenery to scenery library, because there is a shortcut in the documents folder. For me, as I have P3D on a different hard drive, it is a big plus.

Configurator

FlyTampa and their iconic configurator is a great thing. You can configure the scenery as you want. So if you have a slower computer, you can save a lot of performance by disabling some things or changing resolution settings and such. As this is a scenery by FlyTampa, this literally had to be implemented, because, without the configurator, it wouldn’t be a FlyTampa scenery 🙂

Modelling

Modelling of this airport is in my opinion superb. The model of the terminal is smooth, the lamps on the apron have a sharp model as well, or even the houses in the city look very nice. Actually, those autogen ones were slightly underground and it looked really weird then, but as I noticed it was an issue on my side so I had to increase the mesh resolution. Unfortunately, for me, as I have a slower CPU, mesh resolution causes CTD once in a while, so I will have to leave it on 38m as I had it. As from the past reviews, you probably know that I am a lover of the modelled interior feature, which this scenery has implemented, so a big plus for that. On the other hand, the terminal interior is way too bright, but that’s only a detail and not many people will go inside the terminal. Also, the Øresundsbroen bridge is a nice touch to the scenery and adds that feeling that you’re really in Copenhagen (It was in the previous version also, but I had to mention it).

Texturing

The texturing of this scenery is lovely. The textures are sharp and realistic, as there are PBR textures, which can be seen especially at the glass. The textures are looking nice throughout all the seasons. Concerning the seasons, I would definitely appreciate seeing the seasons changing throughout the year. Because setting it up in the configurator isn’t the best thing I’ve ever seen, but have been a feature of FlyTampa sceneries for a long time. Except for the winter, that is changing on its own. During the rain, the textures are behaving as they would in real life. I also really like the ground textures, which are sharp and good looking as well. The ponds are visible perfectly and behave like in real life, so you see it differently when you look at the different angles from a light source.

Surrounding area

FlyTampa usually adds the surroundings to the sceneries. This one is not an exception. The rendition of a par of Copenhagen city looks really nice, there are some custom buildings with great-looking ground textures, which are orthophotos. The autogen looks realistic and it is not placed randomly like in the default P3D. I also loved the fence that is around the airport, not many sceneries include this “safety fence”. There is also a wind powerplant, which you fly over when you are going to land at RWY22L or RWY22R. The trains and surrounding vehicles add a lot to the scenery, and it feels more alive. What I actually didn’t like is the colour difference between the scenery and for example ORBX, as the ground textures of Copenhagen are more saturated than the ORBX. This can be seen especially in the winter.

Performance

Probably the most important thing for the people that do a flight simming. The FPS are really great and I didn’t see any FPS decrease, even though there are PBR textures. There is no difference in the performance between the various weather conditions. Everything behaves like with clear skies conditions. The performance might be different if you set up the scenery in the configurator differently. You have to play with it until you see the best visual and performance result. So high thumbs up for the configurator once again, because even lower computers can run this if you set it up correctly.

Conclussion

FlyTampa Copenhagen v2 is a really good rendition of EKCH airport, even though I didn’t like the season change system or the way too bright terminal interior, the scenery is great-looking and feels realistic. All the vehicles, trains, PBR textures together with sharp modelling, all these things make the scenery feel alive, and for its price tag of $31, it is really great. The performance is flawless as well, the optimization is great and together with the configurator, you can run it pretty on 50-60fps. I would definitely recommend it. If you are interested in buying the scenery, you can do so via the FlyTampa website here.
