The airport was opened in July 1945, when it replaced the Springfield Park and Airport, which now operates as Downtown Airport.

The first operator serving this national airport was American Airlines and through the years it went through a bit of reconstruction, including the terminal and ground facilities.

Springfield-Branson National is served by two runways that are just about 2 kilometres long. In 2021, the airport achieved 47,565 aircraft operations.
