UK2000 Scenery have released Cornwall Newquay Airport as their latest scenery for Microsoft Flight Simulator. UK2000 have already made several airports all over the world for MSFS, with Newquay expanding their add-on list.
About Cornwall Newquay Airport
Newquay Airport is situated in the vast county of Cornwall, UK. It is a hub for both Commerical aviation and aerospace. Located around 5 miles from the town of Newquay, the airport provides a gateway to a beloved tourist destination in England. The location of the airport provides easy access to Cornwall’s beaches, rugged cliffs and small villages.
The airport started as RAF St Mawgan as an airbase for the RAF during WW2. It was mainly used for anti-submarine patrols and as a costal command base. The RAF base remained as an important airfield for reconnaissance and search and rescue operations. During the Cold War, the US Navy used the base for anti-submarine warfare.
RAF St Mawgan (Newquay Airport) was also once home to the British Nimrod between the 1980s and 2000s. Aircraft shelters were built in the 1980s to protect USAF aircraft during the Cold War from potential Soviet attacks. 2008 saw the airport rebranded as Newquay, Cornwall Airport, this saw an investment in Commerical operations.
2008 saw the expansion of the airport with new and upgraded facilities to support increased passenger traffic. 2019 saw its recognition as the fastest growing airport in the UK in terms of passengers. The UK Space Agency later announced in 2021 with plans for the airport to be used as the site of Spaceport Cornwall. 2022 saw its first operational activities for the UK’s space industry.
Today, Newquay Airport serves as a hub for a variety of popular routes which connect Cornwall with major UK cities and popular holiday destinations in Europe. Ryanair, British Airways and Loganair are some of the main airlines that serve the airport.
UK2000’s Newquay Airport
This recreation of Cornwall’s Newquay Airport by UK2000 has many features to help to faithfully represent the airport. Ground markings have been handmade to be realistic and to match those found in real life. These go hand in hand with high resolution ground images in and around the airport to help capture the feel of the airport.
In and around the airport, lots of vegetation has been added as it would be in the real airport, along with accurate fencing. Capturing the essence of the airport at night, the night lighting has also been recreated accurately. UK2000 has also mentioned the add-on does not affect the performance of the simulator much, providing good frame rates.
The terminal buildings and those found around the airport, such as some RAF hangers, have all been modelled with high detail in mind, recreating every aspect of each building whether it be the terminal or some hangers. PBR materials have been used to give each part of the airport a true to life feeling, with static aircraft to give the airport some life.
