Airfoillabs, a veteran aircraft developer for X-Plane, has released several development updates of its new Boeing 737 MAX for Laminar Research’s latest simulator. Described as its “most ambitious project,” the team is already adopting a “completely transparent” approach by actively involving the community in the development process.
3D Development Progress
The developer continues to make steady progress, particularly on the aft overhead panel. The team has shared images showcasing its wear patterns and precise geometric accuracy. This completes the final texturing phase.
Electronic Flight Bag (EFB)
Airfoillabs has reached an “exciting milestone” with its Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) development. Leveraging X-Plane’s new capabilities, the foundation of the EFB has been successfully implemented, though content integration remains in its early stages.
Flight Systems Development
While no images of the flight systems have been shared, Airfoillabs has provided detailed progress updates. The team is refining the engine performance characteristics and aerodynamic modeling. Additionally, the landing gear dampening systems have been enhanced, resulting in more realistic ground handling behavior.
Commitment to Transparency
Airfoillabs is taking an “unprecedented approach” with its new development, as the entire process is being documented on X-Plane.org. The developer believes that creating an open dialogue with the community will help to shape the project into something “truly extraordinary for X-Plane.”
Airfoillabs’ commitment to transparency includes monthly development updates, detailed progress reports on specific systems and features, and screenshots and video demonstrations of implemented features. As the developer moves into more complex development phases, the frequency of updates will be reduced. This will ensure that the team can maintain maximum development efficiency while keeping the community updated.
