AUscene has released Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport (YBWW) for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024. The scenery was previewed on their Facebook page in July, which we covered here. Located in Queensland, the airport serves as a major hub for both domestic and international travel.

About Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport

In 2014, the Toowoomba region welcomed its first jet-capable airport. Significant growth between 2005 and 2013, largely driven by industrial expansion and the development of a transport hub, created the need for new infrastructure. Construction of the airport began in April 2013 on the site of a former quarry.

The airport officially opened in November 2014, one month behind schedule, with a QantasLink service from Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport. Just a year later, Wellcamp saw the arrival of its first jumbo jet, a Cathay Pacific 747 freighter, en route from Sydney to Hong Kong. Following a successful trial, Cathay launched weekly cargo services to its hub. The airport also handled its first international passenger charter, carrying 250 travellers to Shanghai.

In 2016, Wellcamp was designated an international airport and regional gateway, allowing unrestricted access for foreign carriers. However, in the following years, the airport saw the end of some services. Airnorth ended its Wellcamp-Cairns route, while Cathay Pacific moved its cargo flight to Brisbane Airport.

Meanwhile, Qantas, in partnership with Flight Training Adelaide, launched the Qantas Group Pilot Academy at Wellcamp Airport. They operate both the Diamond DA40 and DA42 aircraft for student pilots. Today, QantasLink and Rex Airlines remain the only scheduled passenger operators at the airport.

About AUscene’s Wellcamp Airport Rendition

AUscene delivers a handcrafted rendition of Wellcamp Airport for MSFS, featuring over 200 custom assets optimised to take advantage of the LOD system. The developer describes it as an “accurate representation of the airport and surrounding area”. The scenery also includes 1m DEM (Digital Elevation Model) data, offering the highest quality terrain, paired with high-resolution aerial imagery.

Closer to the ground, pilots can expect detailed PBR textures, authentic aprons with accurate custom materials and markings, and bespoke vegetation placement. Additional assets include vehicles, ground clutter, and flags. The airport also features 3D people, enhancing immersion when used with GSX, for which the developer has provided a dedicated profile. Realistic night lighting rounds out the package, along with interior modelling of the Qantas Group Pilot Academy/FTA hangar.

Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport by AUscene is now available for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024. It is available for purchase from both AUscene’s website and Contrail for £16 (GBP). If you’re interested in previous releases from the AUscene, check out our articles here.
