Black Square has released its latest aircraft rendition, the Rockwell Commander 114, for the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020/2024 desktop flight simulator platforms. The aircraft had been under development for a while now, and some previews had also been shared back in June 2026.

About the Rockwell Commander 112/114

The Rockwell Commander 114, introduced in 1976, is an American four-seater single-engine general aviation aircraft designed and built by North American Rockwell. It is the successor to the Commander 112, following Rockwell’s modifications to the original airframe, which included the addition of a larger engine and other minor improvements. Around 1,300 airframes were produced before the manufacturing line was shut down in 1980. The following year, the type certificate ownership was transferred to Gulfstream Aerospace, which had no interest in single-engine piston production.

The rights were then sold to Commander Aircraft Company in 1988, which improved the interior and introduced other upgrades to the Commander 114B, which was then released in 1992. Production was shut down in 2002, but not before approximately 200 airframes were manufactured. Both the 112 and 114 are conventional layout monoplanes with the main wing set low and a mid-mounted horizontal stabilizer.

Black Square’s Rendition

Black Square’s latest rendition for MSFS2020/2024 brings with it a slew of features, including more than 75 random, scheduled, or performance-triggered failures that can be set, thanks to their Tablet Interface or EFB, and includes events such as engine damage, radio failures, and more. Their EFB itself features configurable options, payload settings, and real-time visualizers for engines, electrical schematics, and environmental systems.

The product includes two variants, the normally aspirated Commander 114 and the aftermarket Turbo-normalized 114 with air conditioning and passenger/crew oxygen. The Black Square 114 also features a physics-based engine simulation with compression, magneto impulse couplings, blade angle, oil temperature, and preheating. The developer has included 15 hot-swappable radios, which encompass the PMS, TDS, and KLN-90B. Over 300 checklist items are provided for 35+ normal, abnormal, and emergency procedures in textual form in the 150+ page manual and in-game using the MSFS native checklist system.

Black Square’s Commander 114 also features a custom sound set created by Boris Audio Works, recorded from the real aircraft. The immersive soundset, with its high-quality engine and cockpit sounds, is meant to fully draw the user into the simulation the team has created. Sounds such as engine starting are not mere recordings, but are instead many-layered sounds, constructed based on the underlying simulation.
