About The B-17

The B-17 Flying Fortress is a World War II-era heavy bomber developed by Boeing. Known for its durability and strategic importance, it was primarily used by the United States Army Air Forces in the European and Pacific theaters of World War II.

It was employed for daylight strategic bombing campaigns against German industrial and military targets. First flown in 1935, the B-17 saw extensive action, earning a reputation for being able to sustain heavy damage and still complete missions. Over 12,000 of these were produced, contributing significantly to the Allied war effort. The aircraft was retired from U.S. service in 1945, following the end of World War II.
