MK Studios has released a new scenery add-on – the Rome Fiumicino Airport (LIRF) for Microsoft Flight Simulator. The product is designed for use with both Microsoft Flight Simulator editions – the 2020 and the 2024.

The add-on includes a recreation of the airport’s terminals using custom-built 3D models and textures. Terminal interiors are modeled and optimized to balance visual representation with simulator performance. The ground layout reflects current airport data, including taxiways, aprons, and runway configurations.

Jetways are custom-designed and functional, allowing aircraft to connect directly to terminal gates. Lighting across the airport has been implemented using a custom approach, runway, and taxiway light systems that follow real-world placement and behavior. Taxiway signs are hand-crafted, matching real-world signage conventions and positioning. Ground service equipment and airport vehicle models are custom-built and integrated into the scenery environment.

Airport elevation and runway profile data are included to reflect accurate slopes and surface transitions. The surrounding airport area features custom points of interest to provide geographic context during approaches and departures. Animated ground service vehicles, along with moving trains and flags, are present to reflect airport activity within the simulator environment.

In real life, Rome Fiumicino Airport, officially named Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport, is Italy’s largest airport and the primary hub for ITA Airways. Located approximately 30 kilometers southwest of central Rome, the airport serves as a major gateway between Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the Americas.

Prior to the global pandemic, the airport handled over 40 million passengers annually. It operates multiple runways and terminals and has received recognition from international airport councils for operational standards and passenger handling efficiency.
