MSFS Expert Series ATR 42-600 And 72-600 Expansion Released - FSNews

MSFS Expert Series ATR 42-600 and 72-600 Expansion Released

Asobo and Hans Hartmann have recently released a long-awaited expansion for the Expert Series ATR 42/72-600. The update adds new cargo, STOL, and Highline variants to the aircraft, among many bug fixes.

The MSFS Expert Series ATR 42-600 and 72-600 were released on April 25, 2023. While the freighter variants of the aircraft were supposed to be included with this initial release, only the passenger variants were included. Updates since then have mostly focused on bug fixes, but this latest update adds the long-awaited ATR 72 freighter variant, as well as the ATR 42 STOL variant, new Highline cabin configurations for both aircraft, and many bug fixes.

ATR 72-600 Freighter

The ATR 72 Freighter is a unique aircraft. As a “regional freighter,” its cargo capacity and short-to-medium range allow it to fulfill a role that few turboprop freighters can accomplish. Having been introduced in 2020, not many have been built, with FedEx operating ten, and the second-largest operator, ASL Ireland, operating seven.

As expected, the freighter variant features new models and animations for the cabin and the cargo doors. Apart from this difference of cargo versus passengers, the aircraft should be functionally very similar to the ATR 72 many simmers will be used to. Keep in mind that, as of writing, there is a bug with the cargo loading of this variant that makes the aircraft roll to the right; the issue is being investigated and a fix is being worked on.

ATR 42-600S (STOL)

The ATR 42-600S variant gives the aircraft STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) capabilities by shortening its take-off roll at MTOW from 1,107m for the 42-600 to just 890m for the 42-600S. This aircraft is still in development in real life and is expected to enter service in 2025 with its launch customers, Elix Aviation and Air Tahiti.

Simmers used to the standard ATR 42-600 can expect shorter take-off and landing distances thanks to the increased power from the 42-600S’s PW127XT engines and the added ability to raise the ground spoilers on landing.

Bug Fixes and New Highline Cabins

While new variants are nice, they’re useless without a properly functioning base aircraft. Thankfully, this expansion also comes with many bug fixes. From the official patch notes, some of the most notable fixes include:

  • Changed VNAV Path following for higher precision.
  • Fixed ACW bus supply logic.
  • Fixed V-FP arming logic.
  • Fixed VOR/BC/APP mode not activating when off-side nav source is used.
  • Fixed TGT IAS showing -1 on VNAV page.
  • Updated electronic checklists to V37.
  • Added freighter support to EFB.

Additionally, new cabin configurations for the Highline variant are included. These new variants differ in passenger capacity and seat configuration. The ATR 72 has 36-seat economy, 28-seat with tables, and 12-seat business configurations available. The ATR 42 has 16-seat economy, 18-seat with tables, and 12-seat business configurations available.

All of these new features and variants are available now as a free upgrade for all owners of the Expert Series ATR 72-600 and 42-600 for MSFS. If you’d like to read the original patch notes, you can do so here. For more news on everything MSFS and beyond, stay tuned to FSNews.
