Through the Microsoft Flight Simulator forums, SiamFlight announced the release of the Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai International Airport [VTCT/CEI] for Microsoft Flight Simulator.
The add-on features a detailed terminal and support buildings, including the Chiang Rai Meteorological Department facility and a Nok Air repair hangar. The package reflects the ongoing taxiway expansion and incorporates a cargo building zone. The custom-animated jetways by SimObjects add an extra layer of authenticity to the airport environment.
SiamFlight opts for MSFS materials instead of PBR textures. The runway, as well as the taxiway guidance signs and lightning system, were hand-placed to match the actual airport. The airport has a profile included with correct parking gate numbers.
For future updates, the developer plans to add landmarks around the city of Chaing Rai and make some moderate changes to the interior and exterior of the terminal.
Chiang Rai International Airport is located in the northern part of Thailand, located 8 kilometres (4.97 miles) from the Chiang Rai city centre. The airport received its “Mae Fah Luang” name in honour of Princess Srinagarindra, the mother of the preceding monarch, Bhumibol Adulyadej, who reigned as Rama IX.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the airport offered many international flights to China, Singapore, and Indonesia. During the pandemic, most of the airport’s flights, including all international flights, were terminated, creating a 50% drop in passengers served each year. Since the end of the pandemic, the airport served over 1,5 million passengers, handling over 4000 passengers per day. It is a hub for Thai AirAsia airlines and serves domestic flights to two Thai cities, Bangkok and Phuket, yet without any international flights.
According to the Airports of Thailand owner of the airport, by the end of 2030, the airport is expected to have built a new taxiway and extended runway.
SiamFlight Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai International Airport is an airport for all domestic flying enjoyers. This add-on is available at simMarket and Orbx store for EUR 11.99 plus tax. To learn more about Thai airports, you can read one of Patrik’s articles about the Phuket airport.
