TFDi Design Ends Development on The Skypark, Project Will Become Open Source

After acquiring The Skypark in June, a career mode add-on for MSFS2020, TFDi Design has announced the end of its development. The developer, best known for its MD-11 for Asobo’s flight simulator, has decided to open-source the entire project, making it available to the community for non-commercial use.

Struggles to Compete With MSFS2024’s Career Mode

TFDi Design stated that they had been working on ideas for both content and the future of The Skypark. As early rumors of a career mode in MSFS2024 emerged, the team reimagined the project with new features. These ideas included new job types, such as medical rescue missions, tour flights, and more.

However, as development progressed, the developer realized that many of its ideas were likely to be incorporated into MSFS2024. The career mode in Asobo’s new flight simulator offers most of the features the team had planned, along with a level of interactivity that the developer cannot compete with, especially for free.

The Final Decision

After gaining hands-on experience with MSFS2024’s career mode and to prioritize future projects that add more value to the community, TFDi Design has made the hard decision to stop development for The Skypark. While this means there will be no new versions or features, The Skypark will continue to function, as the team has no intentions of discontinuing it immediately.

The Future of The Skypark as Open Source

“To keep the spirit of the project alive,” the developer will open source the entire project under a non-commercial license. This means that the whole project source and its work-in-progress code for the new version will be available to anyone in the community. The team invites people with time and passion for the project to continue it.

Closing Notes

TFDi Design thanks its users for their support and enthusiasm, as the developer is looking forward to continuing to improve some of its products such as its MD-11, smartCARS, and smartCARS Pro, with new projects in the future. The original statement can be found on the developer’s Discord server. If you would like to read more about MSFS2024, check out our MSFS2024 Hub.
