About Lubbock Preston Smith Airport

This international airport initially opened in 1937 as South Plains Airport and in 1942, it started serving as a military base after requisition by the Air Force. Its military use ended in 1947, and it was returned to the local government for civil use.

The current civilian terminal was constructed through the first airliner activity from the 1950s to 1960s, and it was opened in 1976. The original terminal now serves as a museum, dedicated to WWII glider pilots.
