FlyingIron Simulations took to their blog page earlier this week to announce a “V2” rebuild of their rendition of the Supermarine Spitfire for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. The dev stated that the product isn’t merely an update or conversion of the current iteration of the Spitfire but rather built from scratch to take advantage of all the features the new SDK provides.
About the Spitfire
The Supermarine Spitfire is a British-made single-seater fighter plane that was primarily used by the Royal Air Force and other Allied countries before, during, and after World War 2. It has the distinction of being the only British fighter produced throughout the war. The Spitfire was a short-range, high-performance interceptor aircraft designed by R.J. Mitchell in 1928, chief designer at Supermarine Aviation Works, a subsidiary of Vickers-Armstrong.
He continued to refine the design until he died in 1937, after which his colleague, Joseph Smith, took over as chief designer. Smith then oversaw the Spitfire’s design through many developments, from the Mk 1 to the more powerful Rolls-Royce Griffon-engined Mk 24, resulting in the Spitfire’s performance and capabilities improving over the course of its lifetime.

What’s coming?
First and foremost, the package will include multiple variants of the Spitfire, including the iconic Mk.IX, the Mk.VIII, Mk.XVI, and the Mk.IXc floatplane. All variants will come with their unique distinctions, such as the Mk.IX’s elliptical and clipped wing versions of the C and E wings, the Mk.VIII’s retractable landing gear, and the Mk.XVI equipped with the lowback/”rear-view” fuselage. The Mk.IXc floatplane is also quite unique as it was an experimental variant developed for maritime operations and equipped with floats and a modified tail.
Furthermore, the team has gone to great lengths to capture each and every minute detail found on the Spitfire, including every rivet, sound, and system. The package will include completely new 3D artwork, a full soundset overhaul for a more dynamic and immersive experience, a full new suite of visual effects, and a total flight model rework that aims to take advantage of MSFS2024’s CFD system and flight model updates. Moreover, the team also aims to integrate complete models of the Merlin engine and the fuel, hydraulics, electrical, and pneumatic systems.

Further features also include a brand new FlyingIron EFB app, a Standard Beam Approach Navigation system, a comprehensive startup management and animation system, and fully functional gyro insight and guns. The developer will also include the possibility to create custom flight loadouts with options for different Slipper Tanks, payloads, and cockpit layouts, which will all be fully integrated with the flight model.
Closing Notes
An exciting and surprise announcement from the FlyingIron Simulations team regarding their Supermarine Spitfire rendition for Microsoft Flight Simulator. The team will reveal new information in the coming days and weeks but did not reveal a price point or a release date.
