VATSIM ‘Cross The Pond’ Information

This years Cross The Pond event, run by Vatsim, takes place on the 14th November. For anyone wishing to take part, the organisers have released some information regarding booking slots, and some other important details. This bi-annual event has become very popular over the years, so Vatsim have had make some changes to ensure all runs smoothly.

The organisers have decided to implement a lottery system when allocating slots. Previously slots were given on a first come, first served basis. It is important, therefore, that members pre-register their interest so a slot can be allocated to them. Booking has already started but will close on the 4th November. They stress that if applicants miss out on gaining a slot, they will be given priority for any upcoming events.

Oceanic events like this, with over a thousand pilots joining in, can put a greater burden on their air traffic controllers. For that reason, Vatsim are asking non-registered pilots to refrain from flying transatlantic on the day of the event. This would ensure that resources are used wisely, and that all participants get the most from the experience.

In order to ensure efficiency, Vatsim are also trialling ADS-B separation during Cross The Pond in Gander and Shanwick OCAs. This separation method means that controllers will be able to see all details of each flight (flight level, speed, etc) so position reports on the NAT are not necessary.

Vatsim also stress that all pilots taking part are capable, and have the sufficient knowledge and experience to get the most from the event. New pilots, therefore, may find an event like this overwhelming. Pilots will need to understand how to file a flight plan and fly transatlantic. Should they be asked to deviate to another waypoint, pilots must know how to do this, and fly patterns as instructed, whether published or unpublished.

On the day, Vatsim will be using Discord channels to communicate critical information, and enable participants to communicate with one another. Participants are encouraged to join the Vatsim discord server by clicking the link.
