Community backing could help Headwind pursue the A330-200, A330-300, A330-800neo and A330-900neo, although no agreement has been announced.

Headwind Simulations has turned to its community with a clear proposal: help demonstrate support for a possible collaboration with Aerosoft around the Airbus A330. The freeware team wants to ask Aerosoft for selected files and assets from its older, non-Pro A330 projects, which could then be combined with Headwind’s own systems and continued development.
If Aerosoft is open to the idea, Headwind hopes to build four variants: the A330-200, A330-300, A330-800neo and A330-900neo. That would bring the ceo and neo branches together within a single freeware family for Microsoft Flight Simulator.
No partnership has been announced. Headwind’s Discord statement does not say that discussions are underway, and there is no indication that Aerosoft has agreed to provide any material. The current campaign is intended to show the level of community interest before a formal approach is made.
Four A330 Variants on the Table
Headwind would not be starting from scratch. Its A339X, an open-source freeware A330-900neo built on the FlyByWire A32NX foundation, is already available for Microsoft Flight Simulator. The developer’s official website also lists the A330-800neo and A330-300ceo as planned projects. The A330-200 is the new addition raised in this proposal.

The announcement does not identify which Aerosoft files the team would request or what those assets might include. It also provides no details about licensing, conversion, compatibility or the amount of additional work involved. The four-aircraft line-up is therefore a goal, not a confirmed release roadmap.
Why Headwind Wants Aerosoft Involved
Headwind’s argument is straightforward. Aerosoft could continue concentrating on its newer commercial products, while work from previous A330 projects would remain in use and receive further development.

The freeware team believes such an arrangement could also create goodwill among flight simulation enthusiasts. That is Headwind’s case for the collaboration; Aerosoft’s position was not included in the announcement.
The appeal comes only days after Aerosoft released its newly developed A330 NEO for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 on August 30. The commercial add-on recreates the A330-900neo and was produced entirely in-house. Its official information page states that an A330-800 is not currently planned, while a patch for the earlier A330 CEO is expected following the NEO launch.

Headwind specifically refers to selected material from older, non-Pro projects. The request should not be interpreted as targeting Aerosoft’s newly released A330 NEO, and the team has not suggested that any current commercial product would be handed over.
A Call for Support, Not Pressure
Headwind is encouraging supporters to react to the original Discord post, share the idea and discuss it. At the same time, the developer has explicitly asked people not to spam or harass Aerosoft staff.
There is no timetable attached to the initiative. Even if Aerosoft is willing to consider it, both sides would still need to agree on the assets involved, the terms under which they could be used and how they would fit into Headwind’s existing work.
For now, this is a community-backed pitch, not a product announcement. Even so, it sets out a clear route to a broader freeware A330 family using work that already exists. The next step will be whether Aerosoft is willing to discuss it once Headwind makes its approach.
