Lovers of vintage short-haulers were greeted with a welcome surprise after developer Sky Simulations released three new variants for its McDonnell Douglas DC-9 for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. The standalone add-on includes the DC-9 21, 41, and 51 variants for the original Maddog, each of which comes with several period-correct liveries.
Sky Simulations released its first lineup of the DC-9 originally for MSFS2020 with the DC-9 10 and 30 variants. The new aircraft pack marks the first major release by the developer in several years. Sky Simulations, which specializes in McDonnell Douglas aircraft, currently also offers the MD11 for Microsoft Flight Simulator.
Across variants, the DC-9 has received a number of improvements and new features, including reworked, MSFS2024-native sounds, a more modern EPR computer, and a new flight dirtector system, representing the evolution from the early-1960s DC-9 10 and 30 models. The new FD system is now integrated in the glareshield and contains the NAV radios, as well as the associated course knobs.
The aircraft is fully MSFS2024-native, with high-definition PBR textures, MSFS2024 decals and icing effects. As per the latest update to the Sky Simulations DC-9 10, the cabin is fully modeled with a number of interactive elements, such as the flight attendants’ interphone panel, galley, and doors. Fuel, hydraulic, and electrical systems are fully modeled, according to the developer, and correspond to real-world DC-9 performance data and charts. These, as well as the refined flight model, have been tested and verified to be accurate by real DC-9 pilots.

The McDonnell Douglas DC-9 is surely one of the most important aircraft of the early jet age, and one that still flies today in the shape of the Boeing 717. With this release, Sky Simulation has brought all of the major variants of the original McDonnell Douglas DC-9 to MSFS, and as a high-fidelity recreation of the real aircraft that offers a challenging, hands-on approach to flying of the days before the magenta line. The addon is available for purchase via Simmarket and JustFlight for around € 56. Owners of the original release are eligible for a 50% discount.
