It’s a remarkable week for supersonic icons in Microsoft Flight Simulator. As Blackbird Simulations launches its long-awaited SR-71A in open beta, KwikFlight brings a different chapter of aerospace history to the sim with Archangel, a meticulous recreation of the Lockheed A-12, better known as the CIA’s secret predecessor to the Blackbird.

Available now for both MSFS 2020 and 2024 via iniBuilds, Archangel finally brings the elusive, high-altitude A-12 to the sim world. The level of fidelity achieved here is rarely seen for this aircraft.

A-12 or SR-71 ?

The real-world Lockheed A-12 was a top-secret, single-seat reconnaissance jet developed in the early 1960s for the CIA’s “Oxcart” project. With its titanium airframe, distinctive delta wing, and twin afterburning engines, the A-12 set speed and altitude records. It laid the groundwork for the more famous SR-71.

While both aircraft were engineered for Mach 3+ flight, the A-12 was lighter and faster. It also operated in even greater secrecy, making it a unique addition to the MSFS virtual hangar.

Key Features

Archangel faithfully recreates the Lockheed A-12 airframe, including its distinctive blended delta wing, pronounced chines, titanium structure, and unique gear and cockpit layout. The aircraft’s twin afterburning turboramjet engines are modelled with staged afterburner logic, TEB ignition, and true Mach 3+ performance at high altitude.

The cockpit features a full two-crew setup for sim functionality. It offers period-accurate gauges, a working autopilot, TACAN and VOR navigation, custom cockpit lighting, and all mission displays required for reconnaissance operations.

Reconnaissance systems include a complete camera suite, with both electro-optical and simulated infrared modes. A dedicated RSO (Reconnaissance Systems Officer) workflow is provided for surveillance missions.

The simulation also includes immersive effects such as visible sonic booms, high-altitude contrails, a deployable drag chute, fuel venting, and animated ground support equipment. All these are accompanied by dynamic lighting for day and night flights. Several authentic liveries are included, with both high-visibility and “Blackbird grey” paint schemes.
