FlyByWire Simulations has released a native version of the A380X for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. This marks a significant step forward for the community-led project and comes shortly after the developer adopted simulator-specific development branches.
This full commitment to the newer simulator allows use of MSFS2024-specific features, bringing up-to-date immersion to the A380, while making significant performance gains through platform-specific optimization.
Native Performance
Along with various quality-of-life upgrades, major focus has been put on bringing stable performance to a range of systems by utilizing MSFS2024’s native SDK. Users with less powerful systems will be able to choose a no-cabin version, allowing for significant performance gains without sacrificing visual fidelity.
The exterior windows have received particular attention, retaining convincing interior depth and perspective through parallax-texturing and correctly reflecting the cabin layout. This, according to FBW, is only the first step in utilizing the sim’s modular architecture, with the developer hinting at future customization options and different aircraft variants in coming updates.

The most significant changes, however, can be found under the hood. FlyByWire has reworked the A380X from the ground up, addressing VRAM limitations caused by the sheer size of the aircraft and boasting an impressive 1-2GB reduction in VRAM usage, according to the developer.
Additional efforts have been made to efficiently utilize the platform’s LOD models, promising further improvements in performance based on users’ unique system capabilities. FlyByWire notes that these initial improvements represent only the basis of a continuing effort to refine the LOD system in an effort to balance performance gains with greater fidelity.
In order to allow simmers to gain the fullest benefit of this update, the developer has shared substantial performance test data, as well as recommended settings for different systems on their website.

Inner and Outer Beauty
Moving into the flight deck, gone are the pink-ish MIP lights of previous versions. Instead, users are welcomed by completely reworked cockpit lighting, employing the newer simulator’s lumen-based lighting system. Reading lights have been added to further aid immersion. Outside, the exterior lights were given the same treatment, receiving a complete makeover with adjusted flash timings, brightness, and the addition of the A380’s taxi cam lights.

A New Foundation
With this update, FBW has addressed the elephant on the apron, and put considerable work towards mitigating hitherto common performance issues. Following community feedback, the developer made performance stability the basis for the A380’s continued existence in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, while laying the groundwork for expanding the plane’s capabilities and systems depth within the platform. This update will surely be welcomed by many struggling with the demanding super jumbo, bringing the world’s largest airliner within reach of a wider audience.
The FlyByWire Simulations A380X is a community-based project and available for free via the FlyByWire Installer and the official website. The native MSFS2024 version can be accessed through the aircraft’s development build.
