Laminar Research has released its December 2025 roadmap summarizing a year of development across air traffic control, weather modeling, graphics, avionics, and scenery systems. The update also provides new details on the upcoming X-Plane 12.4.0 “C-Check Update,” which will focus on aircraft systems refinement and avionics upgrades.

ATC and Weather-Handling Revision

X-Plane 12.1.3 delivered a significant update to the simulator’s built-in air traffic control system. The release added more flexible IFR and VFR handling, including support for SIDs and STARs, alternate runway requests, and diversion logic. Users can now route ATC audio to a separate output device, supporting cockpit layouts that separate environmental and communications audio.

Weather integration was refined through improved METAR and wind interpretation, smoother pressure transitions at altitude, and updates to cloud rendering. The release also added the Downtown Manhattan Heliport (KJRB), expanding helicopter and commuter operations options in complex airspace.

Flight Lesson and Scenery Improvements

X-Plane 12.1.4 refreshed the default flight lesson set featuring Austin Meyer and included smaller refinements across aircraft, ATC, and scenery systems. The update also refreshed Salzburg and Barra airports, providing additional terrain and approach scenarios useful for practice flights and VFR familiarization.

Graphics and Cloud-Rendering Enhancements

Version 12.2.0 introduced new cloud-rendering technology and broader visual improvements. The update improves cloud structure across altitudes, supporting more predictable behavior for weather radar returns and enhancing overall environmental consistency.

Gateway Asset Expansion

Released shortly after FSExpo, X-Plane 12.2.1 added the first batch of community requested object assets as part of Laminar’s next-gen scenery strategy. These assets are intended to support more modern layouts for Scenery Gateway submissions, with additional asset packs planned for future updates.

The 12.3.x Weather Update

The 12.3.x series introduced real-time weather radar scanning that reads cloud volumes directly, offering a three-dimensional depiction of returns and supporting hazard avoidance training during instrument operations. The cycle also included NEXRAD, WXR, and WX APIs, updates to the default A330, and an enhanced version of Dubai International Airport (OMDB).

According to Laminar, the 12.3.x releases reflect internal workflow adjustments designed to shorten development intervals and prioritize high-demand features based on community feedback.

The Next Release: X-Plane 12.4.0 “C-Check Update”

X-Plane 12.4.0 will serve as a comprehensive review of aircraft, avionics, and internal systems. The default A330 will receive several targeted improvements, including a third MCDU, Hoppie integration for ACARS operations, hydraulic system refinements, and further autopilot adjustments during in-cloud turbulence. Laminar describes the A330 as a key benchmark for evaluating current X-Plane technology, which is why the aircraft continues to receive in-depth system updates.

The update will also enhance the default Garmin 430/530 units with new capabilities, including weather radar and TCAS overlays. Users can expect a new enhanced airport and additional quality-of-life improvements that will be detailed closer to release.

Long-Term Platform Work

Laminar outlined several long-term initiatives currently in research or development. These include the next-gen scenery system, multi-threading, continued development of the X-Plane Store, refinements to the flight model, and motion vector technology intended to support improved anti-aliasing. These projects have no scheduled release date and represent extended development paths.

Version 12.3.2 introduced in-app purchases to the demo version, marking the first phase of the X-Plane Store and laying groundwork for future infrastructure changes. Laminar notes that each 2025 update included visible or background adjustments required to support future platform transitions.

Summary

The 2025 roadmap highlights progress in ATC logic, weather modeling, cloud rendering, and scenery development, with 12.4.0 focusing on avionics upgrades and systems refinement. For developers, the expanded APIs and new scenery assets support continued third-party growth across aircraft and airport design. The full roadmap update is available on the official X-Plane website, and X-Plane 12.4.0 is currently in development.
