Through the X-Plane Knowledge Base website, the developers from Laminar Research have revealed the hardware requirements of the upcoming X-Plane 12 simulator. The new version of the simulator is highly anticipated within the community since the initial reveal at FSExpo 2021.
The minimum requirements for X-Plane 12 are:
- CPU: Intel Core i3, i5, i7, or i9 CPU with 4 or more cores, or AMD Ryzen 3, 5, 7 or 9.
- Memory: 8 GB RAM
- Video Card: a DirectX 11-capable video card from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel with at least 2 GB VRAM
The recommended requirements, on the other hand, are:
- CPU: Intel Core i5 8600k or Ryzen 5 3500 or better
- Memory: 16-24 GB RAM or more
- Video Card: a DirectX 12-capable video card from NVIDIA or AMD with at least 4 GB VRAM (GeForce GTX 1070 or better or similar from AMD).
The hardware requirements for X-Plane 12 are set slightly higher than the ones for the current X-Plane 11. Users will need at least 2GB of VRAM instead of 512MB, and at least 4-core CPU instead of only 2-core CPU.
As for the GPUs, the developers have claimed, that only GeForce 900 or newer, and Radeon RX 500 or newer graphics cards will be supported by the simulator.
These hardware requirements are usually not 100% accurate and it often happens that you can run applications on machines with lower performance. We do not have access to X-Plane 12, hence it is hard to estimate whether will this apply to the new simulator as well.
The simulator will be compatible with all available OS types. Thus, meaning Windows, OS X, and Linux.
- OS X: OS X 10.15 or newer (e.g. Catalina, Big Sur, or Monterey).
- Windows: Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit.
In the case of Linux, the developers will not provide support for specific distributions. Laminar Research has team members using X-Plane 12 on Ubuntu 18.04 and 20.04 LTS without problems.
